The Andean Region is the most populated and developed of the country, where most of the main cities are located. Starting at the Colombian Massif, a privileged place where many important rivers have their origin, the Colombian Andes divides into three mountain ranges; running south to north and creating a rugged terrain, with peaks higher than 5300 meters above sea level, green valleys, expansive highland plains, and deep canyons. These three mountain chains, crowned by snowcapped volcanoes, humid moorlands, Andean rainforests and deserts, creates a wide variety of ecosystems.
