This is also a region of vast biodiversity where the natural elements from the Andes converge with those from the Amazon and the Orinoquía to form the Andean foothills (“piedemonte”), independent mountains, transition forests, and floodplains, among others. With an area of 230,000 sq km, of which 20% belongs to Colombia, this region extends from the east Andes to the limits of the Orinoco River, which divides Colombia and Venezuela. The region’s main economic activities are currently agriculture and cattle raising.
