The Colombian Pacific Coast covers nearly 1300 km of coastal line, from the densely forested region of El Darien up north, down south to the Ecuadorian border. This is one of the most humid regions of the planet, with an average annual rainfall of more than 10,000 m3. It has a lush vegetation of great biodiversity with tropical rain forests, coral reefs, mangroves and estuaries, among others.
The region is inhabited mainly by Indigenous communities or African slaves’ descendants. Fifty km off the coast of the Cauca Department stands the Gorgona Island, a “Fauna and Flora Sanctuary” whose waters are home to the humpback whales every year from July to October, coming from the South Pacific for mating and reproduction.
